Volkswagen sure knows how to please. The new, sixth-generation Golf is one of the best compact cars, a great-handling hatchback that’s comfortable, too. And we think the sportiest Golf, the 200-hp GTI, is even better—witness its inclusion on the 2010 10Best list. (The previous GTI, based on the Golf V, made the 10Best roster the three years before that.) Now Wolfsburg is adding the Golf R, an all-wheel-drive variant that is the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive Golf ever.

Probably a grand or so more than the last R32 with few options such as leather seats and 19″ being the primary ones. From initial UK reports, this car is pretty damn sweet – faster than an S3 without the turbo lag, refined ride and manner, predictable steering, 5.5 to 62mph with DSG.Can’t wait for it arrive in the US… my guess is about 12 months from now.

The Golf R is pretty expensive here in europe. Based on your prices for the CC and the GTI in the US, I’d say a manual 4-door Golf-R will be around $35k, the DSG around $37k in the US. Then add leather, xenon headlights etc. and you’ll reach $40k easily. The GTI DSG is here roughly €10k less than the equivalent ‘R’.
