I’ve owned a 2010 SportWagen for about a month, and I actually find it a very attractive vehicle in red. I hate the straight rear view – VW really needs to do something about those frumpy taillights. But the front and side views are quite nice. The 17″ Porto wheels definitely help. All around a fantastic vehicle. Fun to drive, solid, high-quality interior, lots of cargo space, amazing MPG.I’m not really sure where the “cramped legroom” gripes come from. Is it a 7-series Bimmer? No. But there’s as much rear legroom in this car as I had in my 2000 Passat, which was considered a family car. I guess as cars continue to get bigger and bigger, we look back at what was considered adequate yesterday and deem it inadequate today. *shrug*

No, the Golf Plus is a different car.The Golf lineup consists of a 3 door, a 5 door and a wagon. VW of America just for some reason decided to sell the wagon as a Jetta instead. It didn’t really matter since the Jetta has been a Golf with a sedan trunk on the back since the very beginning, but I can understand why it’s a problem now when the Jetta is becoming a model of its own.

The VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI is just full of surprises: It can be loaded full of both people and cargo, and with a full tank of diesel fuel, the car can get you more than 600 miles down the road. All of which makes it no surprise at all that the editors at KBB.com—the online home of the Kelley Blue Book team—named the Jetta Sportwagen TDI one of its “2010 Top 10 Road Trip Cars.”

The numbers behind this honor: With its back seats up, the car offers a healthy 32.8 cubic feet of very usable cargo room, and that more than doubles to a capacious 66.9 cubic feet with those seats down. But the really big news here are the Sportwagen TDI’s big-time fuel-efficiency numbers. Thanks to its clean-burning diesel engine, the Sportwagen TDI achieves EPA ratings of 30 mpg city/42 mpg highway/34 mpg combined, while still having a smaller carbon footprint than the Honda Civic. Notably, the Volkswagen is also eligible for the government’s $1,300 “Advanced Lean Burn Technology Motor Vehicle Federal Income Tax Credit.”

On our journey to Wuste2010 in Las Vegas, we had the pleasure of piloting one of VW’s latest products through the blistering desert between southern California and Nevada. This ’10 VW Jetta SportWagen proved to be a treat. Now I know what you’re thinking – “soccer mom”. And although a bright Salsa red color wouldn’t have been our top choice either, this wagon was fun to drive on our road trip.

At first, the looks of the SportWagen aren’t half-bad. The front-end resembles the Mk6 Golf including the edgier headlights and front grille. The rear retains the design of the Mk5 SportWagen, which we weren’t ashamed of either. In a tuner’s perspective, it wouldn’t take much to make this car a stunner. A front lip, more aggressive wheels and a lower stance would seal the deal. Any takers?
