Like the Volkswagen Golf R and R32, the Volkswagen Touareg performance model is expected and rumoured to be dropping the ’50′ from its previous R50 name and employing the simple ‘R’. Reports say the Volkswagen Touareg R could also be powered by a high-output twin turbo V8 using hybrid technology.

Said to develop upwards of 400kW, reports say the Volkswagen Touareg R will use a twin turbocharged V8 engine outputting around 370kW and a 30-plus-kilowatt electric motor. The hybrid package would not only be more powerful than the already ballistic 2009 Volkswagen Touareg R50, but it’ll also be more powerful than all of its main rivals, including Volkswagen’s own Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Following the success of the Race Touareg 2, which won the previous two rallies and became the first diesel-powered vehicle to win the event, Volkswagen says the new desert racer will be faster and more efficient than the old model, and retain its world-beating strength and durability.

Wind tunnel testing has led to changes in the Kevlar and carbon fibre bodywork with attention given to improving the cooling systems around the vehicle’s roof. The upgrade to the road-going Touareg also sees the Race Touareg 3 adopt a new grille, new LED lights, revised window line and rear clamshell and new wheels.

Touareg’s high-quality cabin, with touch screen satellite navigation, leather, and a sliding rear bench standard across the range. Thd driving position is superb and gives the car a sporty, car-like feel, while there is plenty of head and leg room for six footers in the rear.

There will be four derivatives of the Touareg – SE, Altitude, Hybrid and Escape.
The Escape is for serious off-roading and features 4XMotion, a system with five settings to lock both the centre and rear differential and to engage a low-range gearbox.
